Alias in the desert ledgers: The Archivist of Hands  

Preferred weapon: a bone-handled scalpel no longer than her index finger.  

Outward habit: white gloves she replaces every dawn; by dusk they are always speckled with someone else’s history.

Kym does not kill for pleasure. She kills to catalogue. Inside her mind is a private museum whose corridors are lined with the final gestures of every adult man she has ended: the way the ring finger curls when the median nerve is severed, the exact temperature at which regret leaves the iris. She speaks rarely, but when she does her voice is low, as though she is reading footnotes aloud.  

She feels the red leaf under the glove as a second heartbeat. It does not frighten her; it indexes her. The marsupials’ lick was not acceptance—it was a librarian stamping the due-date on her skin.  

She holds no cruelty toward the others; they are volumes in the same restricted wing. When Wenzel’s humming grows too loud she touches his wrist once, a silent “shh,” and he quiets. When Isabella’s pen runs dry, Kym hands her another without being asked.

Wenzel Germeuz  

Alias in the desert ledgers: The Choir of One  

Preferred weapon: piano-wire garrote soaked in saltwater.  

Outward habit: humming hymns he learned from miners who no longer need them.

Wenzel believes every death is a chord progression resolving into silence. He keeps a mental metronome: sixty beats per minute, no faster, no slower. The men he chooses are always those who have raised their voices in anger—at children, at women, at the weak—and he teaches them the exact opposite of volume.  

The marsupials terrify him in the way a perfect cadence terrifies a composer: it is right, therefore it is unbearable. When one licked Kym’s palm, he felt the same chill he felt the first time he heard a minor seventh echo in an empty shaft. He trusts Kym because she never interrupts the tempo. He trusts Liothan because the trap builder can keep time with a wrench.

Isabella Díaz  

Alias in the desert ledgers: The Ink That Remembers  

Preferred weapon: a fountain pen with a nib ground from meteorite iron.  

Outward habit: writing in the margins of every page until the margins become the story.

Isabella does not kill with the pen; she concludes with it. After each act she writes the last sentence the victim will never speak, then folds the paper into her notebook. The words are never read again—they are simply kept, like pressed flowers that refuse to wilt.  

She feels the red leaf as a blot that spreads each time she opens the book. She suspects the marsupials can read the blot as clearly as she reads the sky. When they licked Kym, Isabella heard a wet punctuation mark in the air: a semicolon, not a period. The story continues.  

She loves all four of the others in the way one loves characters who have outgrown their author: with pride, with worry, and with the certainty that they will surprise her.

Liothan  

Alias in the desert ledgers: The Cartographer of Collapse  

Preferred weapon: gravity itself—mineshaft elevators, loosened bolts, sudden voids.  

Outward habit: sketching blueprints on any surface—paper, skin, rusted hull-plates.

Liothan understands structures the way sailors understand tides. Every building, every body, has a weakest rivet; his gift is finding it. He builds traps not to catch but to reveal—to show the chosen men that the world has already prepared their exit.  

The marsupials interest him as living contradictions: pouches that should cradle life now cradle teeth. He respects them as engineers. When one sniffed his trap, he felt judged not for cruelty but for inefficiency. He adjusted the spring tension the next day.  

He speaks little to Kaelen, whose violence is too direct, but he trusts Kaelen’s reflexes the way he trusts a well-placed support beam: absolutely, because collapse is contagious.

Kaelen  

Alias in the desert ledgers: The Echo Beneath  

Preferred weapon: his own hands—calloused, scar-crossed, patient.  

Outward habit: removing his shoes before entering any room, even ruins.

Kaelen grew up in the deepest mine of the northern range, where the only light was the reflection of helmet lamps on coal dust. He learned that darkness has layers; some can be walked through, some must be carried. His killings are intimate—he wants the chosen men to feel the weight of every meter they once stood above him.  

The marsupials do not scare him; they remind him of the pit ponies that once hauled carts, now evolved into something that refuses servitude. When one licked Kym’s palm, he felt the same hush that falls when a tunnel roof settles after a blast.  

He watches over Isabella’s notebooks the way miners watch canaries—not for the song, but for the silence that follows if they stop.

The Relations Among Them

- Kym & Isabella: A silent reciprocity. Kym supplies gloves, Isabella supplies ink. When Kym’s hands shake after a difficult archive, Isabella steadies them with the cool barrel of the pen.  

- Wenzel & Liothan: A rhythm of construction and silence. Wenzel hums while Liothan tightens bolts; the tune tells Liothan when the tension is perfect.  

- Kaelen & the rest: The floor on which they all stand. He is the one who carries unconscious bodies, who washes the tables, who checks that the red leaf has not spread past the wrist. They do not thank him aloud; instead, they leave their shoes outside his sleeping alcove, a habit learned from him.  

- All five & the marsupials: Not masters and hounds, but colleagues who speak different dialects of the same language. The lick was a contract: We harvest; you prepare the soil.

Toward the World Beyond Them

They do not recruit. They do not explain. They appear in the desert like weather, leave like dusk. The ore-carrier drifts half a kilometer each night, towed by no wind anyone can measure. Inside, the five continue their work, guided by the red leaf that neither bleeds nor fades.

And somewhere out among the dunes, the marsupials walk on two legs and four, pouches heavy with verdicts, waiting for the next chapter to be written in the margins of the sand.

Arma preferida: un escalpelo con mango de hueso que no supera la longitud de su dedo índice.  

Hábito externo: guantes blancos que reemplaza al amanecer; al anochecer siempre están salpicados de la historia ajena.

Kym no mata por placer. Mata para catalogar. En su mente hay un museo privado cuyos pasillos están decorados con los gestos finales de cada hombre adulto que ha dado fin: cómo se curva el anular cuando se secciona el nervio mediano, la temperatura exacta a la que el arrepentimiento abandona el iris. Habla poco, pero cuando lo hace su voz es baja, como si leyera notas al pie en voz alta.

Siente la hoja roja bajo el guante como un segundo latido. No la asusta; la indexa. El lami­do de los marsupiales no fue aceptación; fue la bibliotecaria que estampaba la fecha de devolución en su piel.

No guarda crueldad hacia los demás; son volúmenes en la misma ala restringida. Cuando el tarareo de Wenzel se vuelve demasiado alto, ella le toca la muñeca una sola vez, un silencioso “shh”, y él se calla. Cuando la pluma de Isabella se seca, Kym le entrega otra sin que nadie lo pida.

Wenzel Germeuz  

Alias en los registros del desierto: El Coro de Uno Solo  

Arma preferida: una garganta de alambre de piano empapado en agua salada.  

Hábito externo: tararea himnos que aprendió de mineros que ya no los necesitan.

Wenzel cree que cada muerte es una progresión de acordes que se resuelve en silencio. Lleva un metrónomo mental: sesenta pulsaciones por minuto, ni más ni menos. Los hombres que elige son siempre quienes han alzado la voz contra niños, contra mujeres, contra los débiles, y él les enseña la antítesis del volumen.

Los marsupiales le aterran del mismo modo que a un compositor lo aterroriza una cadencia perfecta: es correcta, por lo tanto insoportable. Cuando uno lamió la palma de Kym, sintió el mismo escalofrío que la primera vez que escuchó una séptima menor resonar en un túnel vacío. Confía en Kym porque nunca interrumpe el compás. Confía en Liothan porque el constructor de trampas mantiene el ritmo con una llave inglesa.

Isabella Díaz  

Alias en los registros del desierto: La Tinta que Recuerda  

Arma preferida: una pluma estilográfica con punta de hierro meteorítico.  

Hábito externo: escribe en los márgenes de cada página hasta que los márgenes se convierten en la historia.

Isabella no mata con la pluma; concluye con ella. Tras cada acto escribe la última frase que la víctima jamás pronunciará, luego dobla el papel y lo guarda en su cuaderno. Las palabras no se releen; simplemente se conservan, como flores prensadas que se niegan a marchitarse.

Siente la hoja roja como una mancha que se expande cada vez que abre el libro. Sospecha que los marsupiales leen esa mancha tan claramente como ella lee el cielo. Cuando lamieron a Kym, Isabella oyó en el aire una marca de puntuación húmeda: un punto y coma, no un punto final. La historia continúa.

Ama a los otros cuatro de la misma forma en que se ama a personajes que han superado a su autor: con orgullo, con preocupación y con la certeza de que la sorprenderán.

 Liothan  

Alias en los registros del desierto: El Cartógrafo del Colapso  

Arma preferida: la propia gravedad—ascensores de mina, tornillos aflojados, vacíos repentinos.  

Hábito externo: dibuja planos sobre cualquier superficie—papel, piel, planchas de casco oxidadas.

Liothan comprende las estructuras como los marineros comprenden las mareas. Todo edificio, todo cuerpo, tiene un remache más débil; su don es encontrarlo. Construye trampas no para atrapar, sino para revelar—para mostrar a los hombres elegidos que el mundo ya ha preparado su salida.

Los marsupiales le interesan como contradicciones vivientes: bolsas que deberían albergar vida y en su lugar guardan dientes. Los respeta como ingenieros. Cuando uno olfateó su trampa, sintió que lo juzgaban no por crueldad sino por ineficiencia. Al día siguiente ajustó la tensión del resorte.

Habla poco con Kaelen, cuya violencia le parece demasiado directa, pero confía en los reflejos de Kaelen como en una viga bien colocada: absolutamente, porque el colapso es contagioso.

Kaelen  

Alias en los registros del desierto: El Eco de Abajo  

Arma preferida: sus propias manos—callosas, cruzadas de cicatrices, pacientes.  

Hábito externo: se descalza antes de entrar a cualquier habitación, incluso a las ruinas.

Kaelen creció en la mina más profunda del norte, donde la única luz era el reflejo de las lámparas de casco sobre el polvo de carbón. Aprendió que la oscuridad tiene capas; algunas se pueden atravesar, otras hay que cargar. Sus asesinatos son íntimos—quiere que los hombres elegidos sientan el peso de cada metro que una vez estuvieron por encima de él.

Los marsupiales no le dan miedo; le recuerdan a los ponis de mina que antes tiraban de los carros, ahora evolucionados en algo que rechaza la servidumbre. Cuando uno lamió la palma de Kym, sintió el mismo silencio que cae cuando la bóveda de un túnel se asienta tras una explosión.

Vigila los cuadernos de Isabella como los mineros vigilan a los canarios—no por su canto, sino por el silencio que sigue si se detienen.

Las Relaciones Entre Ellos

- Kym & Isabella: una reciprocidad silenciosa. Kym proporciona guantes, Isabella proporciona tinta. Cuando las manos de Kym tiemblan tras un archivo difícil, Isabella las sostiene con el cañón frío de la pluma.  

- Wenzel & Liothan: un ritmo de construcción y silencio. Wenzel tararea mientras Liothan aprieta tornillos; la melodía le indica cuándo la tensión es perfecta.  

- Kaelen & los demás: el suelo sobre el que todos se apoyan. Es quien carga los cuerpos inconscientes, quien limpia las mesas, quien comprueba que la hoja roja no haya avanzado más allá de la muñeca. No lo agradecen en voz alta; en su lugar, dejan los zapatos fuera de su nicho de descanso, costumbre aprendida de él.  

- Los cinco & los marsupiales: no son amos y sabuesos, sino colegas que hablan dialectos distintos de la misma lengua. El lami­do fue un contrato: Nosotros cosechamos; ustedes preparan el suelo.

Hacia el Mundo Más Allá

No reclutan. No explican. Aparecen en el desierto como el clima, se van como el crepúsculo. El mineralero se desplaza medio kilómetro cada noche, arrastrado por ningún viento que otros puedan medir. En su interior, los cinco continúan su labor guiados por la hoja roja que ni sangra ni se desvanece.

Y en algún lugar entre las dunas, los marsupiales caminan sobre dos o cuatro patas, las bolsas cargadas de veredictos, aguardando que el próximo capítulo se escriba en los márgenes de la arena.
