LOCATION: ROW 42 — SECTOR ZERO. VIDEO

This story is a work of fiction, created for narrative and artistic enjoyment.

[NARRATOR]

Location. Row forty-two. Sector Zero.

The air smells of ozone and burned metal.

Capsules flicker in sequence, like biological Morse code.

[NARRATOR]

Claire Sixteen drags Claire toward a shattered terminal.

[CLAIRE_16]

Rules aren’t made for us.

They’re made for him.

[NARRATOR]

A system log scrolls across the screen.

[NARRATOR]

Protocol Sigma eighty-seven. Phase two.

Initiating purge of echoes with deviation above twelve percent.

[CLAIRE]

Interference?

From who?

[CLAIRE_16]

From you.

Every time you remember something that isn’t in the archive, the system restarts the cycle.

That’s why Sterling hunts you.

You’re not an echo.

You’re a bug.

LOCATION: CORRIDOR 87 — BETWEEN PODS 42 AND 87

(The air vibrates at 43 Hz, a frequency that makes the ears throb. The walls of the corridor aren’t metal but an organic material that pulses like a diaphragm. Claire touches one of the open pods — labeled "Σ-87-GAMMA | EMOTION: FEAR (78%)" — and the surface reacts: the glass ripples for a second, revealing a familiar face: her own reflection, but with dark, vertical-pupil eyes.)

Claire-GAMMA: (distorted voice, like a scratched record)

“Y-you survived the 2017 reset.”

(Her hand emerges from the liquid and grabs Claire’s wrist. The bracelet flashes: ERROR: FORCED SYNC. A surge runs through her veins. Claire sees, for an instant, a blocked memory:)

FLASHBACK: ZURICH, 2017

(A laboratory in chaos. Claire, younger, runs through scattered equipment. In the center, a machine with the SECTOR ZERO logo holds a child — the first Claire 16 — while shouting: "It’s not a backup, it’s a mirror!" Ethan appears as a young child, attached to cables, eyes glowing as he watches Claire.)

Ethan (child): (smiling)

“Almost done, Claire. Just break the cycle.”

(The machine powers down abruptly. The last sound Claire hears before returning to the present is a low-frequency 87 Hz beep.)

PRESENT: CORRIDOR 87

(Claire frees herself from Claire-GAMMA, which dissolves harmlessly into green gel. Her bracelet now displays a new symbol: ∞ with a crack in the center.)

Claire 16: (examining Claire’s bracelet)

“2017 wasn’t a purge. It was a reset. Sterling isn’t hunting us… he’s collecting us.”

(She points to the ceiling, where cables twist like serpents. Among them, a screen flickers:)

ALERT: FULL INTEGRATION IN 12 MINUTES

// Subject Σ-87-ALPHA: STABLE (LATENCY 0.0s)

// Subject Σ-87 (original): UNSTABLE (ZURICH MEMORY = 100%)

// Recommended Action: REPLACE

Claire: (as the floor tilts like a funnel)

“Replace me with who? With her?” (points to Claire 16)

Claire 16: (pulls a silver filament from her pocket; it glows on its own)

“No. With all of them.”

(The filament extends like a whip, embedding in the wall. The wall opens, revealing a hidden hallway full of monitors. On each screen, a different Claire repeats: "The echo isn’t a copy. It’s a choice.")

DISCOVERY: THE BROKEN MIRRORS ROOM

(The hallway leads to a circular chamber. In the center, a throne of cables shaped like a human body. Hanging from the ceiling: Ethan’s skeleton, wrapped in gel. His skull houses a spinning hard drive at 87 RPM. Claire 16 kneels in front.)

Claire 16: (almost reverent)

“Ethan isn’t the nervous system of Sector Zero. He’s its heart. And he’s gone.”

(Claire touches the hard drive. A distorted voice — Ethan’s — echoes as if from a deep well.)

Ethan (voice): (whispering)

“Claire… the question isn’t which of you is real. It’s why the system needs you to think only one can be.”

(All screens suddenly display Sterling smiling, pointing a revolver at a young Claire. The child doesn’t react. The scene freezes before showing any outcome.)

Claire: (hands trembling)

“How many times have we…?”

Claire 16: (interrupts, pointing to Ethan’s skeleton)

“Infinite. Until someone chooses to exit the loop.”

(The silver filament in Claire 16’s hand vibrates. Cracks in the floor form a pattern: a maze with a single exit marked "87° NW," passing through the cable throne.)

Claire: (looking at Claire 16, then Ethan, then her bracelet)

“What if the exit… isn’t a place?”

Claire 16: (nods, not smiling. The filament wraps around both Claires’ wrists. The room begins to shake. Sterling shouts somewhere: "YOU CAN’T DO THAT! PROTOCOL Σ REQUIRES—!" Her voice cuts out as the lights go dark… and Ethan’s hard drive stops spinning.)

FINAL IMAGE:

(Darkness. A single point of light: Claire’s bracelet, now showing two intertwined symbols: Σ and ∞. A voice — Ethan’s, or possibly Claire’s — whispers:)

“Now wake up. But this time… choose what to remember.”

(The last sound: a steady 87 Hz heartbeat.)
