 "The car was sabotaged."

 "Four tires. Four slashes."

 "Someone knew exactly where we were."

THE FOREST

Trees. Fog. Feet moving through mud.

We run.

Emma behind me. Sam in her arms.

The forest doesn't forgive. Roots. Loose rocks. Mud.

Every step weighs twice as much as the last.

— How much further? — she asks.

— I don't know.

That's the most honest answer I have.

And the most terrifying.

We've been running from two things at the same time.

The police.

And the organization.

Neither one is the worst option.

The worst is if they arrive together.

The sky clearing to the east. Dawn breaking.

My jacket is soaked. My shoes are full of mud.

Sam hasn't made a sound in twenty minutes.

Kids adapt faster than adults.

Or maybe they just don't understand yet what's chasing us.

I'm not sure which one is sadder.

The three of them climbing in. Old upholstery. Worn seats.

Silence. Only the engine.

The seats smell like tobacco and dirt.

Emma takes my hand.

I squeeze hers.

The driver doesn't speak.

Country music plays low on the radio.

I watch through the rear window as the forest disappears into the morning fog.

— Mitchell has the area cordoned off. But she doesn't know you went through the forest. You have hours.

— How many?

— Maybe less.

Less.

Always less.

— I need a car.

— Then steal one.

I look toward the store. The attendant is watching a small TV behind the counter.

— There's a salvage yard two kilometers east — says Valeria. — The owner is a contact. Tell him you come from Gabriel. He won't ask questions.

— And after that?

— Intersection of Route 12 and 61. Closed restaurant. Back door is unlocked. There's an envelope inside.

— What if it's not there?

— Then find another plan.

She hangs up.

Jack holding the receiver. Emma watching from a bench. Sam eating chips the attendant gave him.

When Valeria says find another plan...

There is no other plan.

I look at Emma.

She's watching me with those eyes she has.

The ones that say: I know it's bad. Tell me anyway.

— Salvage yard — I say. — Two kilometers.

— What do you want? — he asks.

He looks at us. Spits on the ground.

— Gabriel. The one who works with Valeria?

— The same.

He nods slowly.

Points to a green Ford Focus parked behind the shack.

— That one. Full tank. Keys are inside.

— Thank you.

— Don't thank me. You don't owe me anything.

Jack opens the door. Keys in the ignition. Engine starts clean.

Emma and Sam get in the back.

I pull out of the yard and onto the road heading east.

In the rearview mirror I watch the salvage yard shrink until it disappears.

— Where now? — asks Emma.

— Intersection of Route 12 and 61. Closed restaurant. There's an envelope.

— And after that?

— We cross the border.

She says nothing.

Rests her head against the seat.

Sam looks out the window at the passing fields.

— Are we going home, Dad?

I keep my eyes on the road.

— Yes, son. We're going home.

But I don't know where that is anymore.

THE ENVELOPE

Abandoned restaurant. Weeds growing through cracked asphalt. Boarded windows.

I park behind a rusted dumpster.

Kill the engine.

— Stay here — I tell Emma. — If you hear anything, you drive north. Find a town. Ask for help.

— I'm not leaving you.

— Emma.

— We go together.

She looks at me with those eyes again.

I'm not winning this one.

— Fine. But Sam stays in the car.

She hesitates.

Then nods.

We stop at a small grocery store on the edge of town.

I read it twice.

— Dogs?

— Canine units. Tracking through the forest right now. She doesn't know you reached the road but it's only a matter of time.

— How long?

— Two hours. Maybe less.

Jack. Emma in the kitchen doorway. Sam behind her, rubbing his eyes.

— The clean car — I say. — Where is it?

— One hour. Intersection of Route 61 and the lake road. One kilometer north of town. My contact will hand you the keys and documents there.

— How do I know it's not a trap?

Pause.

— You don't. But it's your only option.

She hangs up.

Emma doesn't ask what Valeria said.

She already knows from my face.

— What do we need? — she asks.

Not is it dangerous.

Not do we have a choice.

Just: what do we need.

That's what days of running does to you.

It strips everything down to what's essential.

— We leave the car here — I say. — Too risky to drive it. We go on foot through the back.

— Half a kilometer through the corn field and the forest. Then we wait at the crossing.

Sam looks up at his mother.

— Are we running again?

— Just a little more, baby. Then we stop for real.

— You promise?

— I promise.

THE CORN

Back door. Small yard. Half-rotten wooden fence.

We leave through the back.

No noise.

The yard. The gate. The dirt alley.

Sam is in Emma's arms.

— I can walk, Mom.

— I know, baby. But it's faster this way.

Entering the cornfield. Tall dry plants. Rustling.

The corn rustles with every step.

I push the stalks aside to open a path.

He nods. Doesn't complain.

The sun climbs.

The road stays empty.

And somewhere behind us...

The dogs keep tracking.

The viewer holds their breath.

I check my watch.

Emma looks at me.

I tense.

Put my hand on the gun.

Just stands there.

Waiting.

Jack watching. Studying. Deciding.

I watch him for thirty full seconds.

No earpiece visible.

No second car.

No hand near a weapon.

Just a man standing next to a car at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere.

I stand up.

— Stay here — I tell Emma.

— Jack—

— Thirty seconds. If I wave, you come. If I don't...

She grabs my arm.

— You wave.

I walk out from the bushes.

Toward the man.

Toward whatever comes next.

 The man handed me the keys without speaking. Then he gave me the envelope. Inside: three passports. Three names that weren't ours. And a photograph. A photograph that shouldn't exist. A photograph that proved Valeria had known where we were from the very beginning. From the forest. From the first moment. I stood at that crossroads holding that photo. And I understood that we hadn't been running from them. We'd been running toward them. Exactly where they wanted us.
